As the winter session in the schools start the next thought which comes to my mind is zeroing in on a destination for a family break in the winter vacations. This time it could be Ras Al Khaimah for the right reasons
Ras Al Khaimah, the UAE’s northernmost emirate offers a variety of experiences and it is not Dubai folks. There is so much more to the Emirates than Dubai, Ras Al Khaimah is located less than an hour from Dubai and is definitely one of the inroads into the heart of Arabia with stunning beaches to explore, 7,000 years of culture to delve into and a wonderful array of family-friendly adventures to experience Ras Al Khaimah seems to be the perfect option this winter vacation for my family.
Here are my top 6 reasons to visit this wonderful Emirate with family:
1.Sun and Sand
So while Delhi is reeling under the pressure of pollution, air borne ailments, fog and almost no sunshine in the winter months I think it is a good idea to pack our bags and enjoy the winter sun, crystal clear waters and around 64 kilometres of sandy shore. Tucked between the Arabian Gulf and Al Hajar mountains, Ras Al Khaimah offers all this and more, a special mention to the man made Al Marjan Island and the nearby Al Hamra village that are hubs for beautiful beaches, luxury resorts and kid’s clubs.
2. Be a Water Baby
Both my daughters love water and I am getting there slowly 😉 When I got to know about wonderful ways to cool off in Ras Al Khaimah, I really didn’t have to think further. You can indulge in fishing, kayaking with sea turtles and sting rays, snorkelling, scuba diving, parasailing and jet skiing. Spending a day at the Ice land water Park is a must with kids when you are in Ras Al Khaimah, where water slides and rides offer endless fun for kids and adults alike.
3. Desert Adventures
Playing in the sand is an obvious choice when you are in Ras Al Khaimah. Camel or horse rides at the Equestrian Adventure centre, spotting gazelles and oryx roaming or witnessing high speed falcons, owls and birds in action at the terracotta desert nature reserve are other activities that you can enjoy with family.
For families inclined towards adventure activities surfing on sand dunes at Ras Al Khaimah’s Bassata Desert Village is a must do. Families can also enjoy traditional barbecue and the Arabic entertainment at Bedouin Oasis Camp is a a great way to enjoy the Arabic hospitality.
4. Mountain Excursions
You will not miss the mountains in this desert. You can enjoy a family picnic or hike at the Al Hajar Mountains highlighted by bold canyons and breathtaking views. For that adrenalin rush you can trek up to the summit of UAE’s highest peak – Jebel Jais which stands 1,934 meters tall and stays 10 degrees cooler than sea level. Biking and camping are other fun family options. The star gazing experience at the Ras Al Kahimah’s night sky is one of the many experiences that is unmatched.
5. A World of Culture
Ras Al Khaimah’s history is as old as 7,000 years with ample cultural attractions to explore. Dhayah Fort is a 16th century tower which is sure to impress military buff in the family. For a glimpse into a traditional life in the emirate travellers can pay a visit to the Ras Al Khaimah National Museum. The museum also hosts one of the largest collections of historical artefacts and items in the UAE. To learn about the present days travellers can catch a city tour for an entertaining and educational ride around Ras Al Khaimah. In case you want to pick a souvenir or a gift for your friends then a stop at the old souk is a must where you will find genuine merchandise and souvenirs ranging from Arabian spices and authentic crafts to silk pashminas and leather goods.
6. Shop Till You Drop
Everyone loves shopping when on a holiday and Ras Al Khaimah offers plenty of choices. There is the RAK Mall for exciting activities, entertainment centre, it also has an indoor football court and an ice skating rink. There are other famous malls like Al Hamara mall, Al Naeem Mall, Manar Mall and Safeer Mall to cater to all your shopping needs.
Saqr Park is always a popular destination presenting visitors with lush greenery and scenic views along with amusement rides and arcade games.
